Darlinghurst Apartment
Situated in Darlinghurst in what is quite a historic part of Sydney just adjacent to Woolloomooloo and of course overlooking the beautiful Sydney skyline. The building is a sensitive redevelopment of the original Gate Keepers Cottage and the surrounds, which sits opposite the National Art School. The original apartment was a tired fit out that we stripped back, removing dated features and adding colour and texture throughout. An important part of the design was to transition from the busyness of the city below. The way that we found that we could do that is through the use of colour. The use of the repeated lines and grooves was in response the building’s architecture. The external louvers on the façade of the building cast very dynamic shadows at different times of the day. We have repeated this principal in a number of instances, through the joinery itself, wallpaper in the main bedroom and layering it all the way through to the decorative in a custom rug. The marble slabs in the kitchen create something that’s both intimate but incredibly dramatic, the dynamic veining is cloud-like in movement. You really feel immersed, which plays back to that original vision of wanting to create something that was a refuge from the city. With the addition of a fireplace and concealing different elements throughout, it really allowed us to have that sense of luxury and discovery as you notice different things each time you move through the space.
